A blustery wind whipped across their faces when they lift the inn. It cut right to the bone. The dark clouds didn’t help provide warmth, either. It only made things look ominous and maybe a little worse off than they were. Jake wouldn’t have identified them as storm clouds, not exactly. But they had some power to them. Maybe they would evolve into storm clouds in a short amount of time. If they were unlucky, of course.
Now in the daylight, Jake’s eyes had a better look at the southern city. Like old villages in New England, the city was made up of wooden and plywood cabins that sat on streets illuminated by lanterns that had single candles flickering with the wind’s blow. The streets were a little dirty — brown with smudges of white snow plastered on them. Citizens walked up and down the streets, some with their heads down, hating the cold, while others were a little more chipper and marveled in the snowflakes that drifted from the sky.
There weren’t gaggles of people out, especially compared to how many people had been in the bar the previous night. The people who were walking the streets looked well to do and as if they had nothing better to do with their time. All the men and women who had sipped sinful drinks and partied the night away weren’t out in daylight. Jake figured they’d also be at the marketplace trying to make deals.
Lexington nodded forward and Jake followed him through the streets. They journeyed to the end of the first lane and then swerved around the corner. At the end of the street was a tall and dull gray building. All they heard from the building were sounds of smashing pipes, roaring men and shattering glass. This was where the party rolled on. This is where the mischief spent its time.
“Looks like we found the markets,” Jake said.
“Aye. The markets we’ve found indeed. Ready for this?”
“I guess,” Jake said with a shrug. “Just not sure what we’re going to do.”
“Brock’s waiting for us inside. We’ll head in, he’ll direct us toward the necklace and we’ll steal it. Maybe we’ll find another one that looks similar and we’ll take that too.”
Jake understood the plan now. Take two necklaces, but only give Brock the fake one. It was a traditional plan and not exactly original. But Jake figured it would work, as long as they could find one that looked similar. That was assuming of course that Brock had seen the original once upon a time.
With a nod to the stocky man at the door — his face covered in a variety of tattoos and scars — they slid into the marketplace bazaar. It reminded Jake so much of the bar, only like it had had a baby with a sleazy flea market from back home. The air reeked of whiskey, sweat and fried food. Tables were scattered chaotically across the entire single floorspace. Curtains hung high above a few tables, adding to their mystique.
